On 26 March 2023, Ambassador Morakot Sriswasdi, accompanied by Ms. Thitiya Panmanee Consul of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Savannakhet as well as officers from the Royal Thai Embassy, visited Nam Theun 2 hydropower plant (NT2) invested by Electricité de France (EDF) 40%, Electricity Generating PCL. (EGGO) of Thailand 35% and Lao State Holding Enterprise (LHSE) 25%. With installed capacity of 1,070 MW, NT 2 exports approx. 95% of power generated to Thailand and supplies domestically approx. 5%. The Government of Lao PDR recognized NT2 as a successful hydropower plant model, since NT2 not only generates revenues to Lao PDR, but also has a significant role in ecosystem and environmental conservation as well as the development of local communities in surrounding areas. However, rainwater volume in this region has been decreasing every year due to climate change and deforestation.
