On 7 May 2024, Ambassador Morakot Sriswasdi visited the UNODC Alternative Development Project to eliminate opium poppy cultivation and promote coffee as alternative crop in Xam Neua District, Houphanh Province. Coffee from Houphanh is a Fairtrade-certified product and this project has created job opportunities and revenues for local farmers and transformed opium poppy plantation to coffee plantation. The Project has established Vanmai Coffee Cooperative – a farmers’ owned organization- to enable local community to independently process and export high-quality coffee to international markets as well as supply to domestic markets.
