During 9 - 10 September 2026, H.E. Mrs. Krongkanit Rakcharoen, Ambassador of Thailand to the Lao PDR, welcomed Lieutenant General Adul Boonthamcharoen, Minister of Defence, on his Official Visit to the Lao PDR to attend the 30th Lao -Thai General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting. During the meeting, both sides proposed enhancing cooperation to address key border security issues, including (1) combatting drug trafficking, (2) regulation of boats and navigation along the Mekong River, (3) collaboration to tackle transboundary haze and forest fires, and (4) preventing and suppressing cybercrime.
 
This visit underlines the close relations at all levels between Thailand and Laos, particularly in the political and security sectors. In 2026, high-level military visits were frequently exchanged between both countries, including the official visit to the Lao PDR by General Pana Klaewplottuk, Chief of Army Staff, in February 2026; the official visit to Thailand by Lieutenant General Saichay Kommasith, Deputy Minister of Public Security and Chief of the General Staff Department of the Lao People's Army, in April 2026; and the official visit to the Lao PDR by General Ukrit Boontanon, Chief of Defence Forces, in June 2026.
